Submittable 101

Today I want to talk about one of the most important sites for novice writers and authors: Submittable (not that the seasoned professionals can’t hop in line too, but it’s less likely that Stephen King is searching submittable for journal pubs).

I have the unique experience of working both sides of Submittable. I have used the site to submit my work as a writer, and I have managed a literary magazine’s submittable account. Both of these experiences have been invaluable.

So as a writer:

Submittable is great because it gives you the tools to keep track of where you are submitting your work, right there, in site. You can manage the list too. When you get accepted or rejected from a publications, there are different lists to move around and organize how you would like to.

Submittable provides information on all the need to know facts on literary publications, journals, and competitions. Are there fees? When are the deadlines? Will I earn royalties? Pretty much any question you have will be answered in a publication’s Submittable profile.

When you search for opportunities, Submittable allows you to refine by genre, deadlines, and fees. You can also follow your favorite publications and get alerts when they have a new publishing opportunity.

Finally, Submittable allows you to work the way you work best. They accept 50+ types of files for submission, they offer over 10,000 different publications, and since they started in YEAR, over 10 million submissions have been made to publications using Submittable.

As a publisher:

I am the Assistant Director for the Canvas Creative Arts Magazine. Every year in the spring, we publish a 100-120 page journal that features Indiana University student writing and art. I love being able to connect with fellow writers and give students their first publishing experience. The joy on student’s faces when their work gets noticed is so rewarding, but none of that is possible without the best platform behind you to manage submissions.

The first thing I did as AD, invest in Submittable.

When an organization signs up for Submittable, they are given a few different price points depending on how many submissions they expect, the storage space they need, and how long they need services. Most monthly plans start around $30/month. Even better? Submittable lets you try it for free first, if it doesn’t work out after two weeks, no worries.

Canvas generally collects over 200 submissions for the magazine, that we then trim down to 60 accepted pieces. Those are daunting numbers to keep track of. Submittable lets you label submissions on your end, so if something is going in the reject pile, but you don’t want the writer to know until later, you can do that.

There are emailing functions on Submittable as well. Once my team and I selected our accepted pieces, I was able to easily send congratulations messages to the writers and artists. Submittable will provide you with professional templates for acceptances and rejections, so if the words aren’t coming to you easily, you have a backup.
